Guest Speaker: Glenda Kociszewski: Book-it-Forward

In June 2025, three members of the Rotary Club North Lake Mac Satellite travelled to Fiji to volunteer on the Butterfly Buddies a RAWCS Project — a multi-location outreach supporting breast cancer survivors across Lautoka, Suva, and Labasa. Prior to leaving, the project shipped over 180kg of product. During the visit, the team provide fitting training and met the Rotary Club of Labasa to future partnerships.
Shortly after returning to Australia, the Labasa club made contact with an urgent request. The Head of School at Uluibau District School had reached out seeking help: most of the school’s library books had been destroyed in the 2021 cyclone, and no organisation had stepped in to assist. Available funding from the Fijian Government’s Free Education Grant had been directed toward rebuilding the library space and replacing furniture in the school— leaving no budget for books. As a result, children at Uluibau had not had a library lesson since the cyclone.
SCHOOL PROFILE Uluibau District School has 51 primary students and 11 kindergarten children. It is not the only school in Macuata Province facing this situation — many of the 95 primary schools in the Macuata and Bua Provinces require books, supplies, uniforms, and ongoing maintenance.
THE PROJECT
In response, the Rotary North Lake Mac Satellite created Book It Forward a RAWCS project— to acquire appropriate books for school libraries, beginning with Uluibau and distributing through the Rotary Club of Labasa. The project will continue to identify and support other schools across the province in need of the same assistance.
Thanks to the generosity of many Rotary Clubs in District 9660 and the wider public, over 8,000 books were collected for shipment to Fiji. A “Sponsor a Book or Crate” fundraising drive has been launched through the club’s Book It Forward a RAWCS Project to fund continued shipments.
